An essay showcases our ability to understand a question title clearly and to answer it coherently. We usually rephrase the question title in our introduction to clarify for our reader what we think it means. Clarity of understanding and purpose are the key to a good essay. We need a clear understanding of our question title, and a way of answering it that will be clear to our reader, every step of the way.
Two important questions we have to ask before we start writing are: what is the purpose of my essay, and who is going to read it? An essay for a college professor is going to be very different from an essay for a student magazine. Being clear about our purpose and our reader from the outset is very important for keeping our essay on a clear path in terms of content, and using the right kind of language.
