Requirements
This course is designed to meet the requirements to become a Certified Tutor and follows the prescribed curriculum of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
The purpose of this course is to provide training in theory and tutoring strategies for individual and group peer tutoring. This course will analyse such topics as discussions, activities, lectures, supplemental readings, and the exploration of learning patterns.
Course Objectives
- To improve the tutor’s understanding of the tutoring process.
- To strengthen the tutor’s awareness of how people learn and how learning theories apply to tutoring.
- To broaden the tutor’s understanding of ethical concerns related to tutoring and how to handle difficult/uncomfortable situations.

The course consists of 8 sessions as follows:
- Definition of tutoring and tutor responsibilities.
- Basic Tutoring Guidelines (do’s and don’ts).
- Techniques for successfully beginning and ending a tutor session.
- Assertiveness and how to handle difficult students.
- Setting goals and planning.
- Communication
- Active listening.
- Study skills.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, student will:
